FAQ

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

It's possible to wonder if you will have enough space for a vegetable or fruit garden if your current one is not available. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

What amount of sunlight does a plant require?

It depends on the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours of direct sun per day. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. Most vegetables need at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour time period.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination usually takes about 10 days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. As necessary, you can add more potting material. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. To determine how much water your plants require, use a rain gauge. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
