How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
