How to Grow Strawberries in Your Own Garden

grow strawberries at home

Regular watering is important for strawberry plants during their growing season. They should be replaced approximately every two years. Water them well, and weeds should be kept at bay. Strawberries are perennials, so you should plant them several feet apart, and make sure their roots are covered. Strawberries are susceptible to weeds. Make sure to mulch your strawberries well in the winter. It is important to ensure the soil is not too soft and that no weeds can grow in your strawberry beds. Your strawberry plants will be dehydrated and starved by weeds.

The strawberries require about 12 inch of water per day. It is important that you don't overwater them. You can also use a dripper hose to provide the required amount of water for your plants. Don't over-water, because overwatering your strawberry plants will harm them. The strawberries need to get plenty of sunlight for the first few weeks. Three days will tell you if strawberries are ready to be planted.

Strawberry plants prefer 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They are very sensitive to frost, and can wither at higher temperatures. Strawberries do best in a container or pot. They will not grow well in the ground without adequate space. They will thrive under partial or full sunshine. If you don't have the room, consider planting strawberry "plants" in raised garden beds or vertical planters. These are both easy to maintain and quick-draining.

After the first year, cut any runners that may have grown from your strawberry plants. Once the runners are established, they can then be transplanted to pots or other areas of your garden. These runners will eventually stop fruiting so you need to remove them. However, if you want to prolong the harvest of your strawberry plant, you can cut them off when they start growing. Sow the strawberry plants in the autumn, before the ground gets wet. This will give them time to establish before the cold winter months set in.

You must protect strawberries plants from insects and birds in order to have a healthy harvest. Bird nets can be used to protect strawberries grown at home. Their strong fragrances will deter insects and other pests. Another way to protect your strawberry plants is by planting leafy greens in the border around them. These will help to keep birds and worms away.

You can grow strawberry plants in containers throughout the spring and autumn. This will give them a six-month extra growth period and will help them grow stronger roots. In addition, if you're planting strawberries in containers, you should mix the soil with aged compost. The premium mix will ensure that your strawberries are getting the nutrients they need. If they are already in good condition, you can also transplant them into hanging pots. Plant them in the fall to enjoy the summer or spring.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
