How to Grow a Organic Garden at Your Home

best gardening tips and tricks

There are many benefits to gardening organically. Natural materials can help you save money as well as the environment. The soil you cultivate will be healthier, and the pests that attack plants will not thrive. To reduce chemical use in your garden, add compost and animal dung. Additionally, you can reduce the amount pesticides as well as fungicides used in your garden. Rainwater is also a great way to water your gardens.

You will still need to use repellents when organic gardening is concerned. Choose those that are effective in killing the pests, but not harmful to the environment. Some pests can be killed by natural bacteria like Bacillus Thauringiensis (Bt). To kill any pests in your garden, water can be used. Make sure you read all labels and follow all instructions.

If you're unsure of which plants would thrive in your area, you can consult a local nursery. Another great practice in organic gardening is co-planting, in which you plant different kinds of plants together. This can save you a lot of trouble and help to keep your garden clean and beautiful.

Insects will only eat plants that are related to them. This can be done by creating a pond within your garden. They will eat all kinds of insects, including those that could otherwise harm your plants. A pond is also a great way to attract them. If you can't afford a pond, you can install a fish pond in your backyard. This will help attract the pest-eating toads.

FAQ

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

If you don’t yet have a vegetable gardening, you might wonder if it will be possible. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. You could make raised beds that are only 6 inches tall. You can also use containers as raised beds. Either way, you'll still get plenty of produce.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
