FAQ

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature to grow plants indoors is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Others prefer 8 hours in indirect sunlight. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. You can have your farm right at your house!

How do you prepare the soil?

Preparing soil to grow vegetables is very simple. First, remove all weeds in the area where you plan to plant vegetables. After that, add organic material such as composted soil, leaves, grass clips, straw or wood chips. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil tests are another option. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. Plant tomatoes in pots and be careful about putting them in the ground. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
