FAQ

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

Can I grow fruit tree in a pot?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Make sure the pot is deep enough for the root ball to be held. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants need 12 hours direct sunlight each day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Most vegetables need at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour time period.

How much space do vegetable gardens need?

A good rule is that 1 square foot of soil needs 1/2 pound. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

Can I grow vegetables inside?

Yes, it is possible for vegetables to be grown inside during winter months. You will need a greenhouse or grow lighting. You should check the laws in your area before you purchase a greenhouse.

What is a planting schedule?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They provide steady lighting without dimming or flickering. You can find regular or compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
